Trip to Barnstaple

The end for C417?

MUST SEE SITE
So to start with is this find by a friend while looking through fotopic. He stumbled across this FANTASTIC site of buses in Devon and Cornwall in the late 70s, right through the 80s, including pictures taken in Torpoint! This really is an amazing collection and is a credit to the photographer. It is well worth delving through all the pictures (not just the Torpoint ones) as you will find Torpoint buses in some odd places including Truro and Paignton. Nothings changed!

Western Greyhound herritage event

This story is from just today when I was off to the Western Greyhound heritage day. The day started off with me waiting for my 81C in Cawsand. I was there in plenty of time as its usually early. It was a tight schedule into Plymouth to get my connecting bus, but just as buses always do, when you most need them, they fail. Dennis Dart 40002 driven by Gerald turned up 20 minutes late! He was in no rush though and we missed our ferry. Luckily the Western Greyhound was also running late and I managed to catch it! Though this was with incident in that he didn't believe I was under 16, so this took a couple of minutes to convince him of this.
It went smoothly from there until St Columb Major where my connection to Newquay left a couple of minutes late. No worry I thought I have 15 minutes of buffer time in Newquay. Though amazingly I don't know how but by the time we were entering Newquay we were the 15 vital minutes behind time! I was very on edge and as we navigated through the town, things were only set to get worse. We reached Newquay bus station at 11:06, we were pulling into the stop just as the standing Bristol VR put his indicator on! The driver of our bus was not happy with his parking and he went for another attempt. I said to him "Hold that VR, that's my bus!" He took no notice and proceeded with his perfect parking as the VR pulled away without its costumer! An eventful 4 hour journey wasted! The driver was not helpful after this when I asked him "Is there anyway I can chase it" to which he replied "No". I therefore waited until the next bus following the VR 1 hour behind. I asked the driver to let me off where the crossover point is so I could swap to the VR. This happened to be in the middle of no where, miles from any village. After 20minutes the VR still hadn't turned up. And well for the next 1 hour 30 minutes there was no sign of a VR whatsoever!! All that happened was the Vario I had got there on came back! The VR had died on route leaving me stranded for that length of time. Combined with the journey to 'nowhere' this was 3 and a half hours wasted. By which time it was time for my bus back to Plymouth to depart!!
Though the journey back was 'smooth' this was not the case in the literal meaning. 3 more hours on a Vario did no good for my backside and was, for the first time ever, pleased to be on a Trident on the way back to Cawsand.
A complete and utter waste of time, buses these days!! A total of 9 Varios traveled on by myself today! Never again!!!!

The video above is well worth a watch, showing Plymouth variety back 12 years ago! Strange to think that nowadays. Towards the end you will see one of the K reg Olympians, though this one looks like K803 ORL to me (802's sister)

An eventful day out!

The day started off very well! Dave turned up with Leyland Olympian C417 HJN which was a great change from the usual Trident on the service. Though along Witsand Bay it did seem that everything was against us getting to the other end! Firstly this Bradford's lorry was unloading building materials completely blocking the road. This was then not helped by a rubbish lorry queueing up the other side! Though after a few minutes we navigated our way through. Secondly was this tractor parked very obscurely which was a challenge to get past. And then this forklift/tractor got in the way as well!

And there was this, S675 AAE operated by First Somerset and Avon. This bus had just come from Taunton. A journey of around 1hr 20mins.
And to finish it all off was well more challenging the first expected. Our train had been held at Exeter for a late CrossCountry service meaning we were delayed by around 10 minutes. Though it doesn't sound like much it made all the difference when we got to Plymouth. I dashed out of the station to try and get a bus into Royal Parade as fast as possible. Though a 1 turned up just 5 minutes before my 34 left! He terminated at Exeter Viaduct which didn't help me at all. Having o run from there to the 34 stop in only 1 minute. Though before I even got there it seemed that the bus had already departed towards the ferry. 81C arrived in Cawsand too late from me and was not due for a while. So my only option and 3rd fall back (after the 2 34s) was to get a 3 and run from the Brewery Tap down to the ferry. Though even this failed. 38015 turned up late and we were delayed further as this was not a low floor vehicle. This then meant a 30min wait in Admirals Hard for the ferry to depart! But at least the other side there was a 500 to London waiting for me to get me to Cawsand!!

Bad news for LFJ 844W
Bad news came to my ears today after an event that WNPG were attending that I missed. Ex Torpoint Ferrybus LFJ 844W as you know has always been my favorite. Though at pick up from Loddiswell where she is now stored because of FDC not wanting the preservation buses in the depot she was found to have problems. After a little while of trying there was no hope in getting her going. Damage or freezing seems to have occurred over the winter period and she is currently a non starter. The damage may also have occurred when she was being transferred from the depot at Plymouth just 2 days ago when she was running a dream. Possibly run too hard on her first outing for many months? Therefore all WNPG could take to the rally today were 2 cars in the form of Paul's Vauxhall Astra and Mike's Renult Clio. Snap on Sunday!

1 page of fame for FDC bus
The links below show the bus with First Devon and Cornwall. She was used in Plymouth and Barnstaple but is now a runner on the Penzance routes. The last link shows the bus as it was then in the model form.
