Firstly a sorry - this blog should have gone live at 7:00 this morning! My first encounter with failed scheduled blogging so apologies for this!
Of course one of the advantages of the 'new' Dennis Darts to Torpoint is that they arn't being painted in Tamar Link. This means they now frequently appear on other routes in the city such as the 3 and people will never know the difference! Only difference they may see with this is the quality! 43810 is incredibly uncomfortable and the gearbox is completely knackered jumping around gears randomly giving passengers a very jerky ride, particularly in the city with lots of accelerating and breaking.

Snap on Sunday
For today a picture taken on Saturday or a Class 43 (can't tell which one!) passing Dockyard station in the early morning sun. A full post on this trip literally up and down the Tamar Valley line far too many times will be published soon!

Primo in Plymouth
With thanks to Jamie Limb I can bring you this photo of 57000- the Plaxton Primo operating a journey out to Tavistock from Plymouth. This bus has been standing in for other buses if they're not avalible and has been used on a variety of tasks so far. Of course at the moment not all drivers have been driver trained in them - but that is soon to change.

142001 returns via Plymouth
Class 142 'Pacer' 142001 has now returned from a refit at Reading DTMD. There she seem to have had no cosmetic improvements on her. Though she has had a brand new Cummins engine installed in her and is reported to be running like a dream with no clag at all. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing - I'll let you decide! Shame they didn't put a Leyland TL11 back in her!
Thanks very much to Rail Correspondent Louis Rawlings for today's news and photo.

Reddy Ready to go!

No time like the present lets have a go at covering a more major story. Indeed I've always been a bit wary as to getting my facts right with a post at this sort of caliber and that's why I usually simply stray away from this sort of story. But well all I can say he "Here we go!"
As I mentioned earlier in the week, it has been announced that First Devon and Cornwall Managing Director Marc Reddy will be slotted into the top role at First Hampshire and Dorset to replace current MD, Richard Soper who will be moved to a post at First Manchester. Reddy has no doubt been picked for how he has turned around FDC and now the company makes quite an impression the counties with many more high quality routes and buses now operating. Of course there has been some 'loss' due to the fact that FDC have now withdrawn many of their more 'local' non core services. Smaller operators have been able to take this over though and really at this level can do a better job than FDC would be able to do anyway so as a whole has benefited the whole community.
As many of you will know Reddy actually lives in Bournemouth and will now be based there, but will still be under control of all services right down as far as Lands End! I have seen no new appointments to FDC though have heard that Philip Pannel - currently engineering manager at FDC will be joining Reddy up in Bournemouth, with the possibilities of Simon Newport also joining Reddy. Reddy - as you may know used to work at FHD so another tick in the box for his local knowledge and previous experiences in the regions.
But not only will Reddy take over the core First services, he will also take up the relively new 'Greyhound' coach services running from Southampton upto London, of course now in Reddy's sector. This no doubt will be another new challenge and will have to be heavily concentrated on when it comes to the Olympics in two years time. Many people will of course be coming down from London for the sailing events.
As to buses I can only make my guesses. I would doubt First will want any high floor vehicles running in the area come the Olympics. Though Weymouth does have a good majority of low floor vehicles there are of course my beloved X and C reg Leylands along with the H reg Olympians and the P reg Volvo Olympians. And of course who can forget the sole remaining Bristol VR in First Group. It is still yet to be seen whether the VR will make it into 2010. One Open Top Volvo Olympian ran alongside the VR last year so it will simply be a case of wait and see as to what happens! There must be someone up at FHD who's 'into' older buses with such a diverse and interesting fleet still running even in these corporate times.
So there we go my first bash at something a bit more 'high class'!
Blogging overview

As you may have noticed I have now added a hit counter to the side of the blog. Of course you may have seen the digital style one that was there previously but that one never gave me any raw statistics and information I could monitor, unless of course I checked and wrote it down myself. But then still I couldn't see where the visitors had come from/what they were looking at and a whole plethora of other things.
Anyway this new 'Sitemeter' has enabled me to have a good look at it all. You may have noticed I have carried on the previous total from 2007 which currently stands just under 19'000. Looking at the statistics from the last day I must admit I was quite shocked to find that I have had 70 direct visits to the site with 98 'page views'. If I'm honest I thought I was only writing for about 10 local enthusiasts so its great to see that so many people are (hopefully) enjoying the blog! Indeed I'll say thanks to the many encouraging comments I have had recently. Of course a big thank you has to be to Graham of Plymothian Transit. Since links to PTOTPA have been published on his site no doubt the amount of readers have increased.
So really what started out as something very casual and was really only done to 'rival' Cor Magazines/Transport Week at the time has grown into something I must admit am quite proud of. Of course I have a long way to go until I'm what I'll describe as 'up with the bigguns' in that I cover very few of the political stories though possibly in the future this may start to happen!
Of course I'm always open to suggestions on ways I can improve the sight and again thanks to all the readers for their support! (In case you don't know, that's me last year at the WNPG rally! With thanks to Louis Rawlings)

Event coming up in Bridport

Two weeks time will see a start to the rally season in the south west with a preliminary 'Bristol VR day' in Bridport on March 21st.
"It will all be very informal, recreating a few routes around the Bridport area and if anyone wants to join us, you’ll be very welcome – either be at Bridport Bus Station for 10:00 or there are a couple of feeders running from Exeter and Dorchester" - Says Graeme Selway.
The buses involved are expected to be 1128 (XDV 608S) and 1159 (AFJ 766T) both new to Western National Omnibus Co. 1128 finishing its life in Cornwall and 1159 managing to spend its entire career in Weymouth and Bridport.
Feeders:
1159 will depart from Dorchester (Top o’ Town car park) at 09:00
1128 will depart from Exeter, Honiton Road P&R (NB: that’s Honiton Rd, *not* the Sowton P&R on Sidmouth Rd) at 08:30
If there are other locations you would preferred to be picked up at in close proximity to these destinations then please get in contact with Graeme early so details can be arranged.
If you are interested in coming the please contact Graeme on the address below:

Visit to Mutley Plain

Ok this isn't strictly transport related but today I popped up to Mutley Plain - the sight of the Devon Air Ambulance's Plymouth Branch where Radio Presenters David Sheppard and Jo Loosemore are currently 'living' until they raise £2000 for the charity. They are therefore locked in the shop for 'however' long it takes for them to make this amount of money. Of course many of you will have heard me mention Dave before as he is 'one of us' in the fact he is a bus preservationist. As the picture illustrates I even managed to get a signed photograph of Dave while I was there. Of course him trying to present a radio program while other people are talking to him is pretty much impossible! For the keen eyed of you, you may have spotter he has signed it "To HJN" my nickname for obvious links to the Torpoint Olympians, and his being "KTA" simply because he owns both 270 and 275 KTA.
If you would like to donate to this worthy cause please click on the link below or pop into the shop at any of the locations in Devon. The current total stands at £900 to they desperately need your support if they're going to be let out anytime soon.

57000 returns!

I know I know this bus and JHU seem to be the only thing I'm reporting on at the moment and well thats quite true, but then again I've been reporting on the movements of K802 ORL for 5 years now, this just seems to be more frequent fluttering around!
57000 was being used in Barnstaple for a short time when it was reported missing from Tavistock. Though with thanks to another spotter she is back in Tavistock yet again, and has even been used on services to Plymouth today after failure of one of the B6s! I can also update you on what the bus will actually be used on. Ignore what I said about it being used on 89s which is the town service but will actually be used on the 87 to Bere Alston/Ferres! Now I think I've got my facts straight :-)
JHU 902X lives on!

Well seeing as I started this whole where is JHU 902X thing I may as well finish it! Weymouth correspondant Luke Farley seemed to have jumped to conclusions yesterday and strangely, JHU has now turned up at the outstation in Bridport. Luke spotter her running empty, though a Bridport blind has now been fitted rather than the Weymouth blind in her before. So she may just 'Limp' on for a bit longer!
On a Weymouth related note yet again - Luke has been "Inspired" by PTOTPA to re-start his blog 'Transport Weymouth', sister blog to 'Transport Week'. Please click on these links to read some of Luke's high quality posts on the Weymouth and local transport scenes.

WNPG 2010 Rally now confirmed

It is now confirmed there will be a Plymouth Hoe rally in 2010 run by the Western National Preservation Group that will take place on the 25th of July. This will be the 25th Rally WNPG have held on the Hoe. So yet another date to be put in the diaries, hopefully the weather will be a bit better this year though!
Is this the end?

Weymouth correspondent - Luke Farley (why is a Plymouth focused blog reporting on Weymouth? I don't know either!) has reported today NO sighting of JHU 902X both in the depot or on any of the routes. This may well be the end for both JHU and C414 HJN - the two oldest buses in the fleet, though C414 was still in operation yesterday. Looks like I got there just in time!
Snap on Sunday

With the Plymouth Citybus 709s coming so close to the end of their life now I thought I'd take a trip on the 58 to experience them - possibly for the last time. Indeed 58/9 is quite a spectacular route and there were far too many moments I wish I could have been taking a photo on the outside with some beautiful backdrops of the moor. If only I had a car! The 709 is of course perfect for the route and there were several places where I think the Solos may struggle to negotiate as well as the 709s - though of course they will be better on some of the hills!

57000 now in Devon

With thanks to a friend I can bring you this photo of the sole Plaxton Primo with First Devon and Cornwall. This bus was used as a demo in its early life until Truronian bought it to use on their services. Of course when it passed to FDC it stayed in Cornwall for a while until a major crash last year near Redruth. This resulted in a fatality but around 7 months later after major refurbishment its back on the road, though this time in Tavistock. As you will note she is now painted in Barbie 3 with similar variations to the Enviro 200 that came from Truronian as well, at least its out of that horrible pastel green! It will likely be used on the town service 87 to replace one of the Solos on this route currently.
STOP PRESS
The bus has now disappeared from Tavistock depot, there was no sighting of it today. This could simply be a routine check up etc but at the moment its gone missing. Any sightings please feel free to comment.

Trip to Cornwall

With all this action that seems to be happening down South at the moment I decided to have a quick look around down there on Saturday and indeed as always, a trip to Cornwall brings up several surprises!

It was quite a snowy start to the day after traveling aboard the 581 down to Liskeard. As you can see in the picture the station manager had been hard at work sweeping the snow into piles right along the platform.
Of course the main aim was to see one of the 'new' R reg Volvo Olympians, though in fact the first thing that greeted me was F158 XYG - the oldest bus in FDC nowadays (of course apart from the open toppers). Personally I thought this had already been withdrawn seeing as its been laying at the back of Camborne for a while now, but no she's back out again! Though it is a bit of a puzzle why, seeing as all the G reg Olympians are now withdrawn, along with the K regs starting to be withdrawn, yet somehow this has escaped the net!
Ver
y shortly after (the next bus into the Truro!) was local legend Simon Coates driving L637 LEU, one of the Palatine 2 bodied Olympians. Though he soon departed with the BMC (big yellow school thing!) back upto the depot. This seems to be used as a crew bus most weekends seeing as the Transit is now up in Plymouth.
